Milly's Mind
The world worked as fast as Milly’s mind.
As soon as she saw something in her mind’s eye, it existed in the world, subject to the natural laws of physics and what not.
There was a roaring resurgence of pirates when she was 4.
Humans made it to Mars when she was 6; and had ships en route to the moons of Jupiter shortly thereafter.
When Milly blew out the candles at her 7th birthday party, there was world peace. Turns out, all the nations on earth just needed to realize there was one planet and more than enough of it for everyone to share and enjoy.
World Peace was further ensured when, right before her 8th birthday, Milly was told of the potential for responsible nuclear power, and that, when combined with renewable power, humanity could have abundant clean energy. Then she was told about the future possibility of fusion power, and boom, somewhere else on earth, the discovery was confirmed, and access to clean energy was given to all citizens of that wonderful planet as freely as the air they breathed.
Some time after Milly turned 9, humanity discovered light travel and had made contact with alien life forms spread throughout the Milky Way. The aliens were going tell humanity how to reach the other galaxies.
But when Milly turned 10 and told her teacher she wanted to be a writer, her teacher said to think of a more practical career choice.
And life became dull.
